Mold design: 3 core principles determine success or failure

Feb 01,2024

Mold design is a combination of "experience + science", which needs to take into account product performance, production efficiency and manufacturing costs. The core principles include:

Uniform wall thickness: The difference in wall thickness of the product must be ≤3:1 (ideal 1:1), otherwise it will cause warping due to different cooling speeds. For example, the wall thickness of the mobile phone case is designed to be 1.2±0.1mm to avoid shrinkage marks caused by local thickening.

Reasonable release slope: The vertical surface needs to be designed with a slope of 1°-3° to reduce the release resistance-soft plastics such as PP take a small value, and hard plastics such as PC take a large value, otherwise it will cause strain on the surface of the product.

Flow balance: Multi-cavity molds need to ensure that the melt flow path length and cross-section size of each cavity are consistent, and the filling process is simulated through mold flow analysis (such as Moldflow software) to avoid dimensional deviations caused by uneven filling.
