Mold manufacturing: from drawings to finished products

Jan 30,2024

The birth of a set of precision molds requires 8 core processes, and the whole process takes 4-12 weeks (complex molds can reach 20 weeks):

3D design: Use SolidWorks or UG software to complete the mold structure design, including cavity layout, cooling system, ejection mechanism, etc., and perform mold flow analysis and optimization simultaneously.

CNC machining: Templates and cavities are processed through high-speed milling (accuracy ±0.01mm). For fine structures below 0.1mm (such as connector pinholes), slow wire EDM (accuracy ±0.001mm) is required.

Heat treatment: Quenched steel needs to be quenched + tempered at high temperature to improve hardness and wear resistance (for example, H13 steel has a hardness of 50HRC after quenching).

Polishing: The surface of the cavity is gradually polished by grinding wheels, oilstones, and diamond pastes, and the mirror mold needs to be polished to Ra0.01µm, which can clearly reflect the figure.

Assembly: Combine the cavity, guide post, thimble and other parts to ensure that the gap between the moving parts is uniform (the gap between the thimble and the template is 0.02-0.05mm).

Mold test: Install it on the injection molding machine for trial production, and check whether the product size, appearance and mold action are normal. It usually takes 2-3 adjustments to meet the standards.
